How to Install RAM in Laptop & PC: Easy Step-by-Step Guide

Is your laptop or PC slow, laggy or struggling when you open a few Chrome tabs? Adding RAM is one of the quickest and cheapest ways to bring it back to life. The good news is that installing RAM is easy, and most people can do it in about ten minutes with just a screwdriver. The bad news is that a few small mistakes, such as buying the wrong type, can waste time and money.

This step-by-step guide shows you how to install RAM in both a desktop PC and a laptop safely. If you are not yet sure what RAM does, read our simple explanation of RAM vs ROM first.

Before You Start: Is a RAM Upgrade Right for You?

A RAM upgrade helps if:

  • Your computer slows down when you multitask
  • Task Manager shows memory usage near 80–100% during normal work
  • You only have 4GB or 8GB and want 16GB or more
  • You want better performance in games, editing or coding

It will not help much if your real problem is a slow hard drive. If your computer still uses an HDD, switching to an SSD gives a bigger boost than RAM alone.

Step 1: Check Compatibility Before You Buy

This is the most important step. Wrong RAM will not fit or will not work. Check these five things.

  1. Type: DDR3, DDR4 or DDR5. They are not interchangeable.
  2. Form factor: DIMM for desktops and SODIMM for laptops.
  3. Speed: For example 3200MHz or 5600MHz. Faster RAM will usually run at the speed your system supports, but matching speeds is best.
  4. Capacity per slot and maximum total: Check your motherboard or laptop manual.
  5. Number of free slots: Some laptops have one slot, some have two, and some have soldered memory.

How to check what you already have

  • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) > Performance > Memory. You will see the speed, slots used and form factor.
  • Or open PowerShell and run this command to see capacity, speed and manufacturer:

Get-CimInstance Win32_PhysicalMemory | Select Manufacturer, Capacity, Speed

  • Search your laptop or motherboard model number on the manufacturer’s website to see the maximum supported RAM and type.

If you are unsure, tell our team your exact laptop or motherboard model and we will confirm compatibility. You can browse genuine RAM from Adata, Corsair, Lexar and Team, or look at compatible motherboards if you plan to upgrade your desktop platform.

Step 2: Choose the Right RAM

  • Match the type (for example DDR4 with DDR4).
  • Prefer a matched pair or kit (for example 2×8GB) for dual-channel performance.
  • Try to match speed and capacity with your existing stick if you keep it.
  • Buy genuine RAM with warranty from a trusted seller. Fake or relabelled memory causes crashes.

Not sure how much you need? For most users, 16GB is the sweet spot in 2026. Our laptop buying guide 2026 explains how RAM fits into the bigger picture.

Step 3: Gather Your Tools

  • A small Phillips screwdriver (a precision set for laptops)
  • A plastic pry tool or old plastic card for laptop covers
  • An anti-static wrist strap (optional but helpful)
  • A clean, well-lit table and a small bowl for screws

Step 4: Prepare and Stay Safe

  1. Back up your important files. Upgrades are low risk, but backups are free insurance.
  2. Shut down completely. Do not just close the lid or put it to sleep.
  3. Unplug the charger or power cable. For a desktop, switch off the power supply as well.
  4. Hold the power button for ten seconds to discharge leftover power.
  5. Touch bare metal on the case to discharge static before touching any part. Do not wear synthetic clothing on carpet if you can avoid it.
  6. Hold RAM by the edges and never touch the gold contacts.

How to Install RAM in a Desktop PC

Step 5A: Open the case

Unscrew the side panel (usually the left side when facing the front) and slide it off. If you use a Dell or HP brand PC, check the manual, because some compact cases open differently.

Step 6A: Find the RAM slots

The RAM slots are long slots near the processor on the motherboard. Most boards have two or four slots.

Step 7A: Remove old RAM (if replacing)

Push the plastic clips at both ends of the slot outward. The stick will pop up slightly. Pull it straight out.

Step 8A: Insert the new RAM

  1. Open the clips at both ends of the empty slot.
  2. Line up the notch on the RAM with the small ridge in the slot. It only fits one way, so never force it.
  3. Press down firmly on both ends of the stick until the clips click into place.

Step 9A: Use the correct slots for dual channel

If you install two sticks on a four-slot board, they usually go into slots 2 and 4 (counting from the processor), but boards differ. Check the manual. Using the correct slots gives you dual-channel speed.

Step 10A: Close the case and power on

Replace the panel, reconnect the cables and switch on. If the PC boots normally, move to the verification step below.

How to Install RAM in a Laptop

Laptops vary a lot, so always check your model’s manual or service guide first. Some have a small RAM door on the bottom. Others need the full back panel removed.

Step 5B: Remove the back cover or RAM door

Turn the laptop upside down on a soft surface and unscrew the bottom panel or RAM door. Use a plastic pry tool to carefully release the clips. Do not force it.

Step 6B: Disconnect the battery (if possible)

If you opened the full back cover, disconnect the internal battery connector first. This protects the motherboard from accidental short circuits.

Step 7B: Find the RAM slots

Laptop RAM is the small stick (SODIMM) lying almost flat, held by two metal clips on its sides.

Step 8B: Remove the old RAM (if replacing)

Push the side clips outward. The stick will pop up at an angle of about 30 degrees. Pull it out gently.

Step 9B: Insert the new RAM

  1. Hold the new stick by its edges.
  2. Insert it into the slot at about a 30-degree angle, with the notch aligned.
  3. Push gently until the gold contacts are almost hidden.
  4. Press the stick down flat until the side clips click.

Step 10B: Reassemble

Reconnect the battery, replace the cover, tighten the screws and plug in the charger.

Important: Many thin laptops have soldered RAM and cannot be upgraded. If you cannot find a slot, do not force anything. Also check your warranty terms before opening a new laptop, because some brands require authorised service for upgrades. If in doubt, our team can help at the System Palace service centre.

Step 11: Verify the New RAM

  1. Power on the computer. A first boot can take a little longer while the system detects memory.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc > Performance > Memory.
  3. Confirm the total capacity, speed and slots used.
  4. Run a simple stress test, such as using the PC normally for an hour, or use Windows Memory Diagnostic (search for it in the Start menu).

Step 12: Enable XMP or EXPO (Desktop Only)

Desktop RAM often runs at a safe default speed. To get the speed printed on the box, enter the BIOS (usually by pressing Delete or F2 at startup) and enable XMP (Intel) or EXPO/DOCP (AMD). Save and exit. Make sure your processor and motherboard support the speed. If the system becomes unstable, return to the default setting.

Troubleshooting: What If It Does Not Work?

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying the wrong type, such as DDR5 for a DDR4 laptop
  • Forcing the stick instead of aligning the notch
  • Touching the gold contacts with bare fingers
  • Mixing very different speeds or brands without checking compatibility
  • Skipping the manual for laptops with unusual layouts
  • Opening a laptop still under strict warranty without checking the terms

When Should You Ask a Professional?

If your laptop is thin, glued or uses soldered memory, or if you feel unsure about opening it, ask a technician. It costs far less than fixing a damaged motherboard. You can also bring your laptop or PC to one of our Dhaka showrooms, and we will check compatibility and install the RAM for you.

Should You Also Upgrade Storage While You Are Inside?

If you are already opening the machine, it may be a perfect time to add or replace an SSD. Faster storage plus more RAM can make an old computer feel new. Check out Lexar and Team SSDs. If your system is too old to upgrade properly, consider a fresh machine from our laptop collection or desktop range. Not sure which type fits your life? Read laptop vs PC: which is better for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mix different RAM brands or speeds?

Often yes, but the system will run at the speed of the slowest stick, and there is a small risk of instability. For best results, use a matched kit.

Does installing RAM void my warranty?

It depends on the brand and model. Many desktops allow it, while some laptops require authorised service. Check your warranty terms before opening the device.

How do I know if my laptop RAM is upgradeable?

Search your exact model number on the manufacturer’s website. The specs usually say whether memory is soldered or has SODIMM slots.

Is 16GB RAM enough in 2026?

For most people, yes. It handles Windows 11, many browser tabs, office apps and light editing comfortably.

Do I need to reinstall Windows after adding RAM?

No. Windows detects new RAM automatically. If you move from 4GB to more than 4GB, make sure you are using 64-bit Windows.
